Why ChatGPT Reddit Citations Fell and Why I’m Not Panicking

By Cap Puckhaber, Reno, Nevada

I still remember the morning I searched my own name and landed on page three. The day before, I’d been the first result for Cap Puckhaber. Nothing on my site had changed, so the shift came from Google’s side. That same kind of overnight drop just hit ChatGPT Reddit citations, and plenty of marketers are treating it like a fire alarm. My read is that it’s closer to a weather report.

The short version fits in a few sentences. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell about 86% in mid-August, and nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed why. ChatGPT also seems to still read Reddit, even though it credits Reddit far less often. That gap between reading and citing matters for your AI search visibility. It’s also why I’m telling clients to slow down before they change anything.

What happened to Reddit in ChatGPT

The numbers trackers caught

The clearest data came from Promptwatch, a firm that tracks citations in live AI answers. Search Engine Land covered the Reddit ChatGPT citation drop using that data. Reddit averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 to August 7. Between August 14 and 17, that share averaged just 0.52%. That works out to an 86.4% relative drop in a matter of days. Other trackers saw the same shape, including Trackerly, Petra Labs and Semrush.

Search Engine Land also noted that the change was unique to ChatGPT. Reddit’s share of Google AI Overview citations slid gradually, from about 2.5% in early July to roughly 2.1% in August. A slow slide like that is normal movement. One-day cliffs are different. I’d pay attention to that contrast before reading anything bigger into the story.

How the drop unfolded

The timeline has two steps, and the gap between them matters. Around August 8, Reddit’s share slipped from the high 3% range into the mid 2s. Then on August 14 it fell below 1% and stayed there. According to Trackerly, the cliff came in the week after GPT-5.6 became the default model for every ChatGPT user. A model rollout and a citation cliff in the same week is a fair coincidence to flag. It still isn’t proof of cause.

The two-step shape is also why I don’t trust single-cause explanations yet. A clean policy change usually hits in one move. Two separate drops six days apart suggest either two changes or one change that rolled out unevenly. Promptwatch itself called its findings provisional and said it couldn’t rule out a data collection issue. That’s an honest caveat, and it should slow everyone down.

Why did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit

Everyone wants a clean cause, and so far there isn’t one. There’s a decent theory, an official non-answer and a licensing deal that nobody has tied to anything. I’ll walk through each one, because how you read the cause shapes what you do next.

The site operator theory

The leading theory is about fan-out queries. Those are the background searches ChatGPT runs while it builds an answer. On August 8, ChatGPT sharply increased its use of site operator queries, which search inside one specific domain. Something Inc reported that those queries jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of searches. If ChatGPT is pointing more searches at official domains, discussion sites could easily lose citation slots.

Search Engine Journal pushed back, and I think the pushback is fair. Their write-up on why the ChatGPT citation drop isn’t fully explained points out the timing gap. The query change landed on August 8, but the cliff came on August 14. A cause that shows up six days before its effect deserves some doubt. So the site operator change may be part of the story without being all of it.

What OpenAI actually said

OpenAI’s response was short. In OpenAI’s statement on Reddit citations, the company said it doesn’t target or set a fixed visibility level for individual websites. It also said Reddit continues to be cited by ChatGPT. That’s true in the narrow sense, since 0.52% isn’t zero. My read is that a routine update shifted source patterns, which happens more often than most reports admit.

There’s one loose thread worth naming. OpenAI licensed Reddit data in 2024, and Reddit has every reason to care about where that data shows up. Nothing official connects that deal to the August drop. I’d leave it alone until someone with real access says otherwise.

Why I’m not rebuilding around a guess

After my own ranking drop, I gave myself a rule about not making five changes at once. When you change everything, you can’t tell which move helped or hurt. The same logic applies here. Nobody outside OpenAI knows the cause, so a strategy rebuilt around one theory is a strategy rebuilt around a guess.

Here’s the mistake I’d avoid this month. Don’t pull your Reddit budget or rewrite every page because of one chart. If citations bounce back next quarter, you’ll have cut a channel that never stopped working. Worse, you won’t know which of your changes caused whatever happens next.

Where did the citations go in ChatGPT

Here’s what surprised me most. ChatGPT’s total citation volume didn’t shrink. Otterly’s analysis of 16 brand reports found ChatGPT’s own citation count rose about 3.5% over the same window. The slots Reddit lost went to official sites, reference pages, help centers and product documentation. Something Inc summed up the shift as docs replacing Reddit among ChatGPT citation sources.

That shift is good news if you’ve been doing owned-site work. I’ve spent a lot of time on structured data, including my Advanced JSON Schema for AI Overviews post, because pages with clear entities and plain answers are easy to cite. Help centers and pricing pages are exactly that kind of content. When an engine wants the most authoritative page on a topic, it looks for the source of truth. Most of the time, that source of truth is your site.

It wasn’t only Reddit

Reddit wasn’t the only platform that lost ground. Petra Labs data, cited by Something Inc, showed YouTube down 88% in ChatGPT, TikTok down 72%, LinkedIn down 36% and Facebook down 28%. Those numbers point to a broader move away from social and video sources inside ChatGPT. Not every engine followed, though.

Perplexity went the other way. Pierview tracked more than 44,000 Reddit citations from July 1 to August 19, and Perplexity’s Reddit citations roughly doubled from July into early August. Perplexity supplied 71% of those Reddit citations, while ChatGPT supplied 23%. So one engine pulled back on Reddit while another leaned in harder. If you only watch ChatGPT, you’d miss half the picture.

Reading versus citing is the part most coverage missed

Most headlines treated a citation drop as a usage drop. Those are two different things. ChatGPT shows sources and citations separately, and the sources list includes every page it consulted. Citations are only the handful it decided to credit in the answer. Sources usually outnumber citations by a wide margin.

Trackerly found that Reddit’s share of consulted pages didn’t drop after August 14. ChatGPT kept reading Reddit and simply stopped crediting it as often. An Ahrefs study of 1.4 million prompts found a similar pattern earlier, with ChatGPT pulling Reddit pages constantly while citing them under 2% of the time. Reddit may still be shaping answers about your brand. You just can’t see that influence in a citation report.

This happened once before

Reddit’s ChatGPT share also collapsed in September 2025. Coverage at the time was just as loud, and Reddit’s stock fell along with it. Kevin Indig later tied that drop to Google removing the num=100 search parameter around September 10. That change made it harder for data providers to pull deep Google results, which may have reduced how often ChatGPT reached Reddit pages. The cause came from Google, a company outside the OpenAI and Reddit relationship entirely.

Reddit recovered from that drop. Trackerly described it as one of ChatGPT’s most-cited domains for most of this year. That’s why my Ranking Drops Taught Me About Patience in SEO post came down to one lesson, which was to ride the wave instead of reacting to it. Citation shares swing hard and swing back. I’d rather measure for 90 days than guess after four.

How to get cited by ChatGPT if you own AEO or GEO

If AI visibility is part of your job, this drop is a good excuse to clean up your reporting. Generative engine optimization rewards the same thing classic SEO did, which is being the clearest source on a topic. These are the steps I recommend, in the order I’d do them. Each one holds up whether Reddit bounces back or not.

Stop treating one platform’s share as a KPI

A single engine’s citation share is too volatile to report on its own. Track citations by engine, side by side, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Copilot. When one engine drops and the others hold, you know the change sits on the engine’s side. That context keeps a bad week from turning into a bad quarter. It also gives leadership a calmer number to look at.

I’d set up the monthly report with each engine in its own column. One row shows citation count, and another shows the share of tracked prompts where the brand appears at all. A third row lists the pages cited most often. That layout makes it obvious when one engine moves alone. It also keeps the conversation focused on pages instead of panic.

Audit your docs-style content

The pages that gained share were the boring ones. Think FAQs, help center articles, pricing pages, comparison pages and how-to guides. Most companies treat these as an afterthought, so they’re often outdated or thin. Go through them and make sure each one answers its question in the first two sentences. An answer engine optimization strategy that ignores these pages leaves the easiest citations on the table.

Start with the pages that answer money questions. Pricing, plan comparisons and setup guides tend to get pulled into answers when buyers are close to a decision. Check that every price, feature name and date is current, since an outdated page is worse than no page. Add a short summary at the top of long help articles. Then mark up the questions and answers with FAQPage schema where it fits.

Connect your entity signals

Schema helps engines understand who wrote a page and what that person knows. I connect everything with @graph and @id, then add worksFor, sameAs and knowsAbout to each person. That last property has done more for my clients than almost anything else. One healthcare client earned AI Overview citations on 2 of 6 specialties before we added knowsAbout. Afterward, they were cited on 5 of 6.

A B2B SaaS client saw a different kind of win. Within 10 weeks of connecting their author entities, their writers started appearing by name in AI answers. Named authors carry trust that a faceless company page can’t match. I cover the setup in more detail in my Schema Aggregation Can Win More Traffic post.

Keep a change log and test real prompts

My change log is a simple spreadsheet for AI visibility. Each row has a date, what changed on the site and any known model or search update that week. Because updates stack on top of each other, those dates are the only way to untangle cause later. Updating it takes a few minutes a week. Without it, every drop turns into guesswork.

Next, build a fixed set of 10 to 20 prompts about your brand or your clients. Run them in ChatGPT and Perplexity, then compare answers from before and after mid-August. Note which pages get cited and which sources appear only in the consulted list. Your own numbers will tell you more than any industry average. That’s the data I’d trust before changing a budget.

Reddit marketing for AI search still works if you change the goal

Does Reddit still matter for SEO? Yes, and the August drop doesn’t change that. Reddit threads still rank in Google, still feed Perplexity citations and still send direct traffic. Communities there also build trust that no landing page can match. ChatGPT may still be reading those threads too, even if it credits them less often.

What should change is the goal. Instead of trying to get cited through Reddit, aim to get mentioned on Reddit with links back to owned pages worth citing. That way Reddit does what it’s good at, which is conversation and trust. Your site does the job ChatGPT now seems to prefer, which is being the official answer.

Turn your best threads into owned pages

Look back at the Reddit answers that drew the most upvotes or follow-up questions. Those replies prove that people care about a question. Rewrite each one as an FAQ entry or a full guide on your own site, then add FAQPage or Article schema. You keep the Reddit thread live and link to the deeper page when it fits the conversation. Over time, you build a library that engines can cite directly.

How I use Reddit and where else I post

I use my Reddit account mostly for business and finance discussions. It’s a good place to see which questions people keep asking. I don’t treat it as my only channel, though. My posts live on my own site first, then get shared to Substack, Bluesky, Mastodon, Medium and micro.blog. Spreading out like that means one platform’s bad week doesn’t decide whether people find my work.

If you’re starting from scratch, pick one or two more places where your audience already reads. YouTube, LinkedIn, Substack and industry publications all work for different kinds of businesses. Two extra channels are plenty if you post on them consistently. The point is that no single algorithm can erase you overnight.

How I’m adapting SEO as Google and AI keep changing

This lesson goes well past Reddit. Any platform you don’t own can change the rules on you overnight, whether it’s LinkedIn’s feed or ChatGPT’s source picks. I wrote about that in Old LinkedIn Posts Outperforming New Ones and in Why I Stopped Treating Paid Ads As My Only Marketing Plan. Your site, your schema and your email list are the pieces nobody can reallocate. Build there first, then rent attention elsewhere.

Here’s an analogy I come back to a lot. Selling only on Amazon feels great until a policy change buries your listing or cuts your margin. Authors who rely only on Audible face the same problem, since the platform sets the price and owns the customer relationship. A brand store and an email list give you somewhere to stand when the rules shift. Citations work the same way, and owned pages are your storefront. I touched on this idea in How AI Agents Are Rewriting the Rules of Retail.

Write so answers can be pulled cleanly

AI engines pull short, direct passages. Put the answer first, then the explanation. Use question-style H2s that match how people actually search. Keep paragraphs short and factual, and add original data whenever you have it. The Dataset schema section of my Advanced JSON Schema post shows how to mark that data up so engines can find it.

Judge results over 90 days

Daily citation data is too noisy to act on. I judge changes over a 90-day window, because that’s long enough to see past a single update. Each month, I check Search Console, AI referral traffic in GA4 and my fixed prompt set. If all three move the same way, I trust the trend. When they disagree, I wait another month before touching anything.

Setting up AI referral tracking in GA4 is simpler than most people expect. Create an exploration or channel group that filters for referrers like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Watch which landing pages those visits hit, because those pages are the ones engines already trust. Compare that list against your citation tracking each month. When a page earns citations but few clicks, the answer may be complete enough that readers don’t need to visit.

My quick checklist for AI search visibility

This is the short list I’d hand any marketing team this week. None of it depends on knowing why Reddit dropped. Each task makes your site easier to cite no matter which engine changes next. Work through it in order, and come back to it in six to eight weeks.

TaskWhy it helps
Audit owned docs, FAQs and comparison pagesThese page types picked up the share Reddit lost
Connect schema with @graph, @id and knowsAboutEngines can tell who wrote a page and why they’re credible
Track citations across several enginesOne engine’s swing stops looking like a crisis
Turn top Reddit answers into owned pagesYour best ideas live on a page engines can cite
Start an AI visibility change logDates make it possible to separate your changes from theirs
Re-check in six to eight weeksEnough time passes to see a real trend

Build citable pages on a site you own

Rented visibility can vanish overnight, and Reddit just learned that inside ChatGPT. The fix is slow and unglamorous. Build pages on your own site that are worth citing, connect them with schema and measure across engines instead of one. That work pays off whether ChatGPT cites Reddit at 4% or 0.5% next quarter.

If you want help auditing your schema or setting up citation tracking, Black Diamond Marketing Solutions can help with exactly this. You can also follow along on my Substack, where I share what I’m seeing in client data as it happens. I’d rather you build something durable than chase the next headline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit completely?

No, it didn’t stop completely. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell to about 0.52% in mid-August, which is low but not zero. OpenAI has said Reddit continues to be cited. Trackers also found ChatGPT still consulting Reddit pages even when it didn’t cite them.

Why did Reddit’s ChatGPT citations drop in August 2026?

Nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed the cause. The leading theory points to an August 8 change in how ChatGPT builds fan-out queries, with far more site operator searches. Search Engine Journal noted that the biggest drop came six days later, so that theory doesn’t fully explain it. The drop also landed the week after GPT-5.6 became ChatGPT’s default model.

What sources replaced Reddit in ChatGPT?

Official sites, reference pages, help centers and product documentation picked up most of the share. ChatGPT’s total citation volume didn’t shrink, so the slots were reallocated rather than removed. YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn and Facebook also lost ground in ChatGPT during the same period.

Is Reddit still worth it for SEO and AI visibility?

Yes, Reddit is still worth your time. Threads rank in Google, Perplexity’s Reddit citations went up over the same period, and the communities build real trust. The smart move is linking from Reddit to owned pages that engines can cite directly.

What’s the difference between AEO, GEO, and SEO?

SEO focuses on ranking pages in traditional search results. AEO, or answer engine optimization, focuses on getting your content pulled into direct answers like featured snippets and AI Overviews. GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on being cited by tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. In practice, all three reward clear answers, strong entity signals and original data.

How do I track whether ChatGPT cites my website?

Start with a fixed set of 10 to 20 prompts about your brand and run them monthly in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Log which pages get cited and which appear only as consulted sources. Check AI referral traffic in GA4 alongside Search Console. Dedicated tools like Promptwatch and Trackerly can automate the tracking if you need scale.
